Protecting people at work by achieving a zero accident rate.
We promote and maintain safe working environments for our employees and contractors. Safely operated plants and qualified personnel are important to ensure smooth production and trust of our stakeholders.
Solvay's strategy is based on:
- Implementing a culture of safety and pursuing an objective of zero working accidents
- Aiming at the same level of safety for Solvay employees or subcontractors
- Carrying out an analysis of each accident, disseminating knowledge obtained from the investigation and undertaking corrective measures in all comparable units.
Accidents of people at the Group's sites
The frequency rate of occupational accidents with lost time (LTAR) for Solvay’s personnel and contractors’ personnel further decreased, from 3.1 in 2006 to 0.8 (including Rhodia) in 2011. By comparison, the average LTAR for the European chemical industry is currently around 5.

Safety program for contractors

Targets for 2012
- Introducing structured programs to protect the employees against risks at all sites, ensuring the programs extend to subcontractors.
- In pursuit of our objective to achieve a zero rate for accidents, attaining a frequency rate for personal accidents involving stopping work (TF1) of 1.2, and including also the frequency rate for personal accidents not involving stopping work (TF0) in the Management reviews.
- Carrying out structured behavioral safety programs for the most important production sites.
- Making the safety programs for subcontractors general, checking that the Group’s recommendations on the safety of subcontractors are applied, and making the training and safety clauses general in their contracts, with verification of compliance.
- Obtaining OHSAS 18001 certification for safety-management systems at 30 of our production sites.
