Classification, labelling and packaging

New rules for classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals defined by the European Union.

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) was adopted in 2003, to harmonize at international level communication of hazards and risks associated with chemicals.

The European Union has therefore adopted, in 2009,  its own existing regulation by issuing the new “Classification, Labelling and Packaging” (CLP) Regulation and its application is mandatory for all 27 members.

The first phase applied to pure substances, started in December 2010. This phase is in coordination with the application of REACH Regulation to harmonize and extend the former regulatory framework for chemicals.

The application of the CLP Regulation involves everyone -- purchasing, legal, medical, transportation, production staffs and, of course, toxicologists.
Solvay supports the main objective of the Globally Harmonized System which aims to ensure that all information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals the Group manufactures and markets are available and understandable to all of its stakeholders.

Specifically, the Group is committed to fulfill obligations of the corresponding CLP Regulation for all its substances and mixtures placed on the EU market according to the CLP timeline.

To implement the GHS/CLP process and rules, Solvay can rely on its REACH organisation.
