Classification, labeling and packaging

Solvay meets the regulatory evolutions related to products safety such as those resulting from the CLP Regulation / Globally Harmonized System.

Classification Labeling Packaging (CLP) Regulation / Globally Harmonized System (GHS)

The CLP Regulation is the application of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) throughout Europe. Adopted by the United Nations in 2003, GHS is designed to harmonize at international level communication of hazards and risks associated with chemicals and standardize the criteria governing the classification, labeling and packaging of hazardous chemicals. The classification of a substance or a mixture reflects the type and severity of the hazards, i.e. its potential to cause harm to human beings or to the environment.

Solvay/Rhodia & CLP

Solvay commits to fulfill CLP obligations for all its substances and mixtures and their applications through its activities of production, importation, marketing and use, according to the CLP timeline.

Solvay and Rhodia successfully completed the 1st CLP phase applied to pure substances (classified as dangerous) and adapted in consequence the product documentation including Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and package labeling.

The deadline for the application of CLP requirements for substances in mixtures is 2015 but several Solvay SDSs of mixtures are already compliant.

Product safety information

  • Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
The SDSs bring together systematically all the required information on the hazardous properties of each substance and the risks associated with their use. They are legally required at the workplace; their content is recasting due to REACH/CLP and must include the classification and labeling of the chemicals together with other safety information.
  • Product Safety Summaries (PSS)
Within a project initiated by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), Solvay produced and published 60 “Product Safety Summaries” which are short and simple descriptions of its main products: properties, uses, potential health and environmental hazards described in an accessible and non technical language understandable by a large public.
