Product lifecycle

Taking care of products sustainability throughout their lifecycle.

Together with its customers, Solvay is developing products that are safer, economically viable and environmentally friendly, particularly for industries that see their product strategies in terms of ecoefficiency: construction, food-processing, detergent, etc.
Our development strategies include analysis of the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycles, from raw materials to the final waste products.

Overall ecoefficiency of products

Solvay's products are building blocks for other industries: we take into account the full lifecycle of products we manufacture, anticipating substitution of unsustainable products.

The Group is developing life-cycle assessments in partnership with our customers, with a view to jointly ascertaining the ecoefficiency of products in their diverse applications.

Instruments for assessing the “sustainability” of products

For many of the products it manufactures, Solvay has contributed to having “lifecycle assessments”.
These have looked at how our products perform in comparison with others, and what contribution they make to sustainability in their main applications.

The Group has also developed and validated its own multi-criterion instrument to analyze the sustainable nature of a product in its various applications: Solvay Sustainability Screening (S3).
This is a tool using a standard questionnaire to identify sustainability strengths and weaknesses, and what improvements can be made in manufacturing and using our product, by looking beyond the environmental impact of the product's lifecycle.

Ecoefficient applications

Conservation and improved use of water resources

Sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide also help produce potable water. In paper-making, an industry that uses large amounts of water, the move to closed-circuit production depends in particular
on the use of Solvay's hydrogen peroxide as a bleaching agent.

Chemical and plastics specialties serving advanced technologies

Polyphthalimides and Torlon® resins - Solvay Advanced Polymers -, fluorinated polymers and perfluorinated fluids (from Solvay Solexis), offer the chemical, mechanical and thermal resistance
that is essential in the IT and aerospace (for engines) industries.

Food packaging
with higher efficiency

The waterproof and mechanical resistance properties of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) make it effective in protecting foodstuffs, using much less packaging material.
