Sustainability performance assessment.
Solvay is committed to:
- Calculating ecoprofiles for all of its major products.
- Taking part to lifecycle assessments covering the whole value chain for applications of its products.
- Using validated sustainability assessment tools for all planned innovations or acquisitions, and more generally in making decisions for all important investment plans.
Assessment tools have been selected for Solvay at 3 levels
- The analysis of the Group’s activity uses a tool designed to assess each key product in each of its key markets: the Sustainability Portfolio Management (SPM) tool.
An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of a project from the societal, economical and environmental perspectives can be achieved with the S³ tool (Solvay Sustainability Screening).
- Other tools offer more focused analysis, such as the lifecycle assessment tool or eco-profile analysis and environmental emissions.

Assessing performance - different tools with different perimeters
Various types of tools are available to the industry, covering a large number of sustainability aspects, for a variety of perimeters. An assessment may focus on a single product or an entire corporation, business portfolio or business entity.
Boundaries of an assessment may also vary from other standpoints:
- All or part of the lifecycle: from a single production to the entire lifecycle, including raw materials and transport.
- All or part of sustainability parameters: from the assessment limited to a full eco-efficiency analysis.
Assessment by societal rating organizations
Solvay selected a imited number of reference societal rating agencies: Oekom, Sustainability Asset Management, Vigeo, FTSE4good and the Carbon Disclosure Project.
