Solvay & the EU Chemicals Regulation REACH

"The brunt of the tasks still lies ahead, with the deadlines for the first registration phase coming up already in 2010."

Christian Jourquin, Chairman of the Executive Committee

In the spirit of REACH, Solvay as a manufacturer, importer, marketer and downstream user is fully responsible for proving that the chemicals it manufactures and puts on the market in the EU do not affect adversely human health or the environment.

Further on, Solvay sees REACH as a strategic opportunity. This process will have beneficial effects throughout the whole supply chain.

Indeed, the REACH objectives are in line with Solvay’s sustainable development commitment, and aim to bring:

  • A higher level of protection of human health and the environment: by encouraging a better knowledge sharing of the chemical substances and their applications,
  • Proper functioning of the internal market: by contributing to the free circulation of chemicals,
  • Innovative and job-creation in the chemical industry by triggering the development of new substances that better protect health and the environment.
  • A good balance between health, safety and environment and the competitiveness of the chemical industry: by collecting, in the registration process, the views of the various stakeholders involved (industrial users, scientific bodies, public authorities, end-users, consumers, NGOs,..).
