Why is a 24-hour antimicrobial surface cleaner like Actizone™ important?

Most conventional disinfecting cleaners are only effective for killing germs that are already present on a contaminated surface at the time of application. But in practice, as soon as the surface is wiped and then touched, it is recontaminated and must be disinfected again. To make matters worse, many consumers mistakenly believe their disinfecting cleaners provide lasting antimicrobial protection, when in reality, these cleaners kill bacteria and viruses for only a few minutes. A long-lasting antimicrobial cleaner like our ActizoneTM F5 disinfectant formula continues to kill bacteria and viruses for 24 hours after it is applied to a surface and will continue to be effective even after recontamination.* This prevents the contaminated surface from acting as a vector for the spread of diseases between reapplications. This 24-hour surface protection means consumers can clean less often and still enjoy reliably cleaner surfaces.

How does Actizone™ technology work?

Actizone™ F5 utilizes the proprietary polymer system Actizone™ P5, an optimized surfactant package Actizone™ S5 with quat active ingredients, to create powerful and long-lasting antimicrobial formulations. Our polymer forms a thin film with antimicrobial actives that remain on surfaces for extended periods of time and continue to kill bacteria and viruses as needed over 24 hours.* The protective film produced with our polymer ensures the trapped antimicrobial actives remain ready to act on microorganisms over time. Even when continually recontaminated and eroded by repeated contact, 24-hour antimicrobial formulations with quat actives and Actizone™ technology retain sufficient levels of antimicrobial actives to be effective, unlike conventional disinfectants.*

Does Actizone™ F5 disinfectant act as a COVID-19 disinfectant solution?

Yes, preliminary testing indicates that the ActizoneTM F5 disinfectant formula is effective at rapid kill of human coronavirus (a similar class of virus to SARS-CoV-2), and it protects from many common viruses for 24 hours after application.* US EPA Emerging Viral Pathogen Policy indicates that products proven effective against human coronavirus are likely to be effective as a COVID-19 disinfectant solution. When combined with quat active ingredients, ActizoneTM technology can be used in a range of effective virus disinfectant solutions.

Which efficacy tests show the results for the Actizone™ F5 disinfectant formula?

The efficacy of the ActizoneTM F5 disinfectant formula is verified through our compliance with a variety of testing standards in several countries. Some of the most significant testing standards that ActizoneTM F5 complies are:

  • EN 1276 : 2019 - Suspension test featuring high soil for bacteria five minutes
  • EN 13697 : 2015 - Surface disinfectant test featuring high soil for five minutes for bacteria and 10 minutes for yeast
  • US-EPA RSS - Residual Self Sanitization (99.9% kill up to 24 hours) Test for long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy  for bacteria in five minutes

Do final quat products based around Actizone™ polymer technology require biocidal product registration?

Biocidal product registration varies widely around the world by region, with some countries having specific biocidal product registration programs. Final product formulators are responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant biocidal product registrations, which allows formulators to have more flexibility with the colorants, fragrances, labels and claims of their products. What flexibility do I have to make Actizone™-based biocidal products at my own production site?

Actizone™ products are designed to maximize formulator flexibility and ease with a range of ingredients that can be combined or used independently. Actizone™ P5 is our proprietary polymer that is compatible with standard quats to provides fast-acting and long-lasting antimicrobial benefits. On November 12, 2021 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the registration of Actizone™  F5. Solvay is now working to obtain U.S. state registrations for Actizone™  F5 required to market in specific states. Claims allowed by the EPA registration include that Actizone™  F5: (1) provides initial disinfection on hard non-porous surfaces after 5 minutes of contact time against a wide range of viruses and bacteria , including SARS-CoV-2; and (2) eliminates bacteria  when applied to hard, non-porous surfaces for up to 24 hours. Solvay is currently conducting studies to obtain EPA approval in the future for claims that certain Actizone™  products are effective at eliminating viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, for up to 24-hours after application.
