Hemodialysis is a medical procedure where blood is artificially cleaned. This involves blood passing through a dialyzer (an artificial kidney) to remove waste and excess water. The dialyzer uses tiny hollow filters that look like microscopic straws called a semi-permeable membrane made from Udel® PSU and Veradel® PESU. Over 90% of all dialysis membranes used to treat chronic kidney disease are made from polysulfone (PSU) or polyethersulfone (PESU). Udel® PSU and Veradel® PESU have become the polymers of choice for these membranes.
The high-strength nature of Udel® PSU (polysulfone) is a crucial specialty polymer biopharmaceutical production, specifically in single-use systems. Additionally, Udel® PSU is a semi-tough, transparent thermoplastic with excellent mechanical retention properties and thermal properties and chemical resistance. Beyond its excellent biocompatibility, Udel® PSU has been tested under gamma sterilization up to 50kGy, the preferred method of sterilization for single-use systems and meets the industry standard for post-gamma conditioning under the USP Class VI testing. Udel® PSU offers high-strength, transparency and excellent hydrolytic stability to meet the demands of single-use systems in biopharmaceutical processing.
Udel® PSU is widely used throughout the main components of biopharmaceutical processing including filtration, peripherals and containment. Here, Udel® PSU serves in the production of membranes and their additives, supports, and housings, connectors, valves, clamps and sensor housings and can be suitable for fill and finish needles, bioreactors and final product bags.
Solvay’s sulfone polymers have been used to make membranes for over 25 years. They are soluble in conventional processing solvents and used to make hollow fiber, flat sheet, and tubular membranes. Low cyclic dimer grades improve the stability of dope solutions, reduce filter clogging, and minimize manufacturing defects.
These high-temperature thermoplastics impart high fiber strength, toughness, rigidity, and hydrolytic stability. This, combined with their excellent chemical resistance, enables membranes to tolerate a variety of feed streams and cleaning methods.

Udel® PSU has successfully replaced brass in pressurized hot water applications for over 20 years. This reliable polymer for plumbing adapts to diverse environments and guarantees cost-effective performance in systems that require continuous exposure to hot chlorinated water, including fitting bodies, manifolds, balancing valves and faucet cartridges. When submerged in water, Udel® PSU ensures good creep resistance and low water uptake, which makes this specialty polymer the standard in hot chlorinated water environments.
