From life to death!
Discovered almost simultaneously by Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Joseph Priestley at the end of the Age of Enlightenment, I was only baptized in 1777 by Antoine Lavoisier who realized that I was an element playing an essential role in combustion. In Greek, my name means acid.
Amongst the most abundant elements in the universe, I am also the most common element found in the Earth's crust just ahead of silicon. In nature, I am found in different forms. I am a gas in the atmosphere, a liquid in water, a solid in rock. I am the main constituent of the oceans and of sand.
I am reactive and, like carbon, I am a member of the family of non-metallic elements in the periodic table. One of my main characteristics is that I react with the vast majority of other elements to form oxides.
In industry, I am chiefly used to manufacture metals – notably steel – and to produce chemicals. I am also used to disinfect water, sterilize medical equipment or bleach textiles and paper pulp.
I am at the origin of life and account for 60% of the mass of the human body. Although I play a vital role in the respiration of living organisms, I accelerate their ageing by damaging their cells. This is why many cosmetic products claim to be anti-oxidants with the principal goal of neutralizing my harmful effects and preserving the beauty of the skin.
