Bauxite grinding and handling aids
Solvay’s CYQUEST® Bauxite Grinding Aids (BGAs) and Bauxite Handling Aids (BXDs) were developed to improve the handling and flow properties of moist bauxite. This technology offers significant financial and environmental benefits to the Alumina industry.
CYQUEST® BGA positively impacts the rheological property of bauxite slurry by reducing the viscosity and stickiness during the grinding process. As a result, less energy is required and the specific energy consumption per ton of bauxite ground is reduced. This less viscous slurry is also easier to pump and again requires less energy. The overall reduction in energy consumption ultimately results in reduced carbon emission to the atmosphere. Viscosity reductions of up to 35% and increased mill throughput of up to 15% has been observed with no negative impact on bauxite particle size.
CYQUEST® BXD functions by absorbing the free moisture content of the bauxite and agglomerating fine particles. The product can be applied at the mine site or during the unloading process to help prevent the buildup of bauxite on surfaces during the loading, unloading and reclaiming of bauxite. Benefits include increased mill throughput, reduced viscosity and stickiness during grinding, and reduced energy required for grinding.
Solvay continues to explore the advantages of this chemistry and works with customers individually to assess the needs and benefits this technology can provide.
