Superamic®

Magic Additives for the Electronic Ceramics Industry

During the recent years, the passive-component industry as well as the ceramics industry has had to face new technical challenges, such as:

  • Component miniaturization
  • Increasing reliability and stability
  • Improving performance

Solvay Rare Earth Systems extensive expertise in key manufacturing technologies for mineral products includes crystallographic phase control and morphology control.

The Superamic® range was specifically designed to be incorporated into ceramic formulations including dielectrics, piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics. One main characteristics of most of those three products is the very fine elementary particle size (between 10 and 500 nm).

Features & Benefits

  • High purity
  • Fine elementary particle size allowing miniaturization
  • Easy reactivity and high reliability

Applications

  • Fine rare earth oxides for Base Metal Electrode (MLCCS)
RES is now supplying fine rare earth oxides designed and approved for BME, including yttrium, holmium, dysprosium, gadolinium, ytterbium oxide. Products may be customized and can be developed upon special request as very fine particle size powder.
The search for higher capacitance MLCC has lead to an increasing number of finer layers requiring even finer powders. RES is addressing this new requirement through improved oxides within the Superamic® range.
  • Ceric Rare Earths for capacitors and microwave filters
New generations of microwave filters and NPO capacitors used in wireless communications. RES has developed special Neodymium and Samarium oxide grades designed for high frequency application.
  • Rare Earths for other microwave applications
Yttrium is widely used in YIGS (Yttrium Iron Garnets) for ferrites marketed as resonators or circulators. Gadolinium is also a standard doping agent for garnet structures. RES can provide several Superamic® products meeting YIG requirements.
  • Oxygen sensors
Standard finger-type oxygen sensors are usually based on partially stabilized yttria zirconia. Yttrium oxide from RES is used in standard oxygen sensors and RES has launched new yttrium oxide grades for new generations of sensors, both planar or linear. These sensors require much thinner layers and therefore finer yttrium oxide as raw material.
  • The Superamic® range of products can also be used in many other applications such as sintering aids and glass or structural ceramics additives.
