The Elements of the Periodic Table
Our tribute to the International Year of the Periodic Table
It is 150 years since Dmitri Mendeleiev discovered the periodic system of chemical elements, making 2019 the "International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements" (IYPT2019) as proclaimed by the United Nation General Assembly and UNESCO.
If you want to learn about the future, you have to look into the past, says Qi-Feng Zhou, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) President. That’s what we do this year by celebrating the 150th anniversary of the periodic table and looking to our future.
Journey to the heart of the matter
Since 1869, Mendeleiev’s revolution represents one of the most significant achievements in science, capturing the essence not only of chemistry but also of physics and biology. The periodic table is a unique tool, enabling scientists to predict the appearance and properties of matter on Earth and in the rest of the Universe.
As one of the main sponsors of IYPT2019, Solvay considers this initiative as an excellent opportunity to highlight its strong devotion to chemistry bringing innovative solutions to society and our planet.
Without chemistry, our cars, smartphones, batteries, cables, pharmaceuticals, triple pane windows, etc. that we all use in our daily life... would not exist.
Thanks to its experts and their accurate understanding of science, Solvay commits to enabling cleaner mobility and the efficient use of natural resources with no boundaries.
