Hylar® 5000 PVDF for Architectural Coatings
Hylar® 5000 is the ideal coating for AAMA 2605 applications. Hylar® 5000 is a PVDF base resin used in the formulation of long-life architectural coating systems for metal elements of residential, institutional, commercial and industrial building types.
Hylar® 5000 HG is a higher gloss PVDF base resin used in the formulation of long-life architectural coating systems for metal elements of residential, institutional, commercial and industrial building types.
Hylar® 5000 and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF are supplied exclusively to approved licensees.
Performance
The inherent long-life characteristics of 70% Hylar® 5000 PVDF and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF coatings outperform silicone-modified performance polyester, polyester, acrylics, plastisols, thick film urethanes, anodized metal and FEVE coatings.
Hylar® 5000 coatings, blended at the optimal ratio of 70%-30% PVDF to acrylic maintain their color fastness and gloss longer than all other architectural coatings. Performance of both Hylar® 5000-based coatings surpasses AAMA 2605 requirements.
Hylar® 5000 PVDF and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF key features
- 40+ years of durability
- Superior chemical, weathering and UV resistance
- Non-chalking
- Surpass AAMA-2605
- Available in coil and spray applied formulations from licensees

Hylar® 5000 and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF: Long Lasting Performance for High Gloss Architectural Applications

Processing
Coil or spray application
Using Hylar® 5000 PVDF powder as a base, along with an acrylic resin and appropriate inorganic pigments, it is possible to prepare premium architectural coatings.
A liquid coating is formed by dispersing Hylar® 5000 PVDF powder under very high shear into a blend of acrylic and latent solvents. This dispersion is unaffected by ambient temperatures, but when heated the powder particles dissolve and coalesce. By manipulating the solvent balance, a stable dispersion is produced that can be handled and applied much like standard liquid coatings, and then heat-cured into adherent integral films.
Hylar® 5000 PVDF-based coatings may be either coil or spray applied.
Baking and curing conditions of Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF may be slightly different from standard Hylar® 5000 due to differences in molecular weight and crystallinity.
Applications
The combination of carbon-fluorine bonds with carbon-hydrogen atoms gives PVDF its extremely stable structure. Both Hylar® 5000 and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF are inherently inert and withstand long term UV and gamma radiation resulting in excellent color and gloss retention without chalking.
PVDF also resists acids, alkalis and oils. These coatings ensure a long-lasting, rich, colorful, durable finish and gloss with relatively no visible signs of ageing despite years of relentless sun, temperature extremes and harsh environmental conditions.
Coating for Metal Construction
70% Hylar® 5000 PVDF factory-applied coatings provide the ultimate protection for composite panels, curtain walls, extrusions, louvers, metal roofs, facades, column covers and decorative components. Whether coil coated or sprayed, Hylar® 5000 coatings are readily applied to aluminum, aluminized steel, galvanized steel and Galvalume.
Hylar® 5000 PVDF coatings can be formulated into a rainbow of colors and finishes to glorify the palette of every architectural designer. Beautiful structures benefiting from the protection of Hylar® 5000 PVDF coatings can be found throughout the world, from North America to Europe, Asia to the Mid-East. A wide range of buildings including monumental, commercial, industrial, residential and institutional have all enjoyed a service life well beyond expectation.
Coating for Cool Metal Roofs
Hylar® 5000 and Hylar® 5000 HG PVDF are a key component of coatings used in cool metal roofing systems, formulated with special inorganic pigments by Solvay licensees into paint systems that have high solar reflectance. Choosing a cool metal roofing paint system with Hylar® 5000-based coatings will retain a building's aesthetics, energy efficiency and its value for many years. Use of cool metal roofs with a Hylar® 5000-based finish can contribute multiple points toward LEED certification of a construction project.
Cooling requirements can be dramatically reduced, leading to up to 40% lower utility costs and possible equipment cost savings due to reduced cooling capacity. Lower electricity consumption results in reduced emissions and improvements in the environment.

Hylar® 301F PVDF for Coatings
Hylar® 301F PVDF is a versatile engineering plastic with a balance of physical properties that qualify it for high performance service in a wide range of applications.
Performance
Hylar® PVDF coatings possess the characteristic stability of fluoropolymers when exposed to harsh thermal, chemical and ultraviolet environments.
Key features
- Stability at temperatures up to 316°C
- Excellent chemical resistance
- Excellent weather resistance
- Suitable for coating of metallic and fabric or fiber reinforced laminates
Processing
Hylar® 301F PVDF is used to produce a dispersion coating that can be applied to metal substrates and baked at high temperatures to produce a smooth film.
Applications
Hylar® 301F is a high melt viscosity PVDF grade for non-architectural coatings such as chemical process equipment, automotive underbody, fasteners and brake tubes applications or for industries where exposure to highly corrosive chemicals and elevated temperatures is standard.
