Brussels, November 4th, 2014 --- Solvay is showcasing at the Challenge Bibendum global summit in Chengdu, China, how its innovative chemical solutions and products help to make transport cleaner, safer and more efficient.
Sustainable mobility is all the more important in a vast and highly populated country like China where economic growth has led to a significant expansion of transport and infrastructure. Addressing the challenges of clean transportation, Solvay demonstrates at Challenge Bibendum its solutions in lowering both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as its contribution to bolstering transport performance in city traffic or in the air.
Solvay’s main four areas of expertise in sustainable mobility are in:
- Lightweighting – sophisticated polymers such as Technyl®, Solef®, Radel®, reduce the weight of a vehicle’s structural, semi-structural parts or mechanical components.
- Electrification – solutions like LiTFSi salts and Solef® PVDF extend the life and increase performance of Li-Ion batteries in electrical vehicles.
- Powertrain efficiency – Optalys®, Actalys® and other rare-earth based and mixed oxides formulations boost performance of automotive catalytic converters, minimizing CO2 emissions and making it possible to meet the strictest regulations.
- Green & clean technologies – the Zeosil® range of highly dispersible silica reduces the rolling resistance of tires, thereby lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 7%.
Visitors to the summit can use Solvay’s clean technologies in mobility by test-riding a “Bud-e” electrical foldable scooter, with integrated 3-D printed components from Solvay’s Sinterline™ Technyl® powders. The urban scooter was built in partnership with French start-up company Kleefer.
Exemplary for Solvay’s role in sustainable mobility is Solar Impulse, the airplane that flies day and night on the sun’s energy with 6,000 innovative Solvay products on board. Thanks to this pioneering project many of Solvay’s sustainable transport solutions are now on the market. During its world tour next year, the Solar Impulse 2 will stop over in China, spearhead of Solvay’s growth in the Asia-Pacific.
