Mackadet® OPR-2: Naturally-based Opacifier for Personal Care
More and more countries are looking to prohibit cosmetic products containing solid plastic particles inferior to 5 mm. A proposal to restrict intentionally added microplastics in the European Union was published in January 2019 by The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and updated in March 2019. According to this new regulation, Styrene acrylate copolymers, the most used opacifier and unfortunately not biodegradable, will be considered as microplastics and banned by 2025.
In this context, Solvay has developed a naturally-derived and readily biodegradable opacifier: Mackadet® OPR-2.
Mackadet® OPR-2 provides a creamy white and caring appearance to formulations. Thanks to a high and white opacifying power, it is easy to formulate without adding a rheological agent if the formulation's viscosity is >3000 cps.
