Fostering interest in STEM and STEM careers with CERN

As part of our efforts to engage children and young people in STEM subjects, Solvay partnered with CERN. CERN is the European Laboratory for Particle Physics. Together we launched an education program for high school students. 

At CERN, physicists and engineers from over 100 countries study nature's smallest building blocks. These fundamental particles help explain how our world and the Universe work. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, driving progress in a range of cutting-edge technologies.

Part of CERN's mission is to inspire and train future generations of scientists and engineers. They will carry on this journey of exploration. Every year, thousands of students and teachers from around the world take part in CERN's education and outreach programs. 

A partnership combining online and onsite learning

The CERN-Solvay Education Program initially launched in January 2022. Designed to foster interest in STEM and STEM careers, the program mixes both online and onsite learning at CERN. It starts with education content for a global online audience. It then offers students a chance to engage more deeply with research at CERN.

Part of the education portfolio of Science Gateway, CERN's flagship project for science education and outreach. Onsite CERN-Solvay student camps for high schoolers: Students who complete the second level can apply for the third level.

In each edition, 30 motivated students from around the world can explore a real STEM workplace. They will experience CERN’s unique international work culture. They will also learn about science, many technologies, and different STEM careers.

CERN-Solvay student camps give students a chance to build interest in science. Students also gain confidence by experiencing science in the workplace.

In addition to workshops, visits, and lectures, students will work on small research projects together, guided by CERN scientists. Participants will also meet like-minded students from around the world. They may influence future career decisions.
