Solvay channels internal travel carbon pricing into local climate and nature projects

Over €750,000 mobilized since 2023 to turn travel emissions into positive environmental impact

Solvay created the Travel Carbon Fund in 2023, applying an internal carbon price of €100 per ton of CO₂ emitted during business travel. The proceeds are reinvested at site level into environmental projects that support both climate and nature.

Since its launch, the Fund has mobilised over €750,000, supporting nine projects worldwide that may not have been launched under traditional investment criteria. This includes three new projects selected in 2026: in Dombasle (France), Solvay will restore ecosystems over more than 20 hectares and expand reforestation; in Paulínia and Santo André (Brazil), two projects will improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and save water.

Collectively, these projects are delivering measurable results, including nearly 72,000 trees planted, more than 38,000 m³ of water saved each year, and over 80 hectares restored or planted across Brazil, China, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Thailand. Together, they also contribute to an annual reduction of -3.4 kilotons of CO₂ emissions

“As a global company, we rely on business travel to stay close to our customers, develop strategic partnerships and engage with our teams. While the greenhouse gas emissions derived from our travels can be reduced through responsible practices, they cannot be eliminated entirely. The Travel Carbon Fund allows us to take responsibility for what remains and turn it into concrete sustainability projects, all while creating engagement and pride across our sites and teams. While relatively modest in scale, the Fund illustrates a practical approach to scope 3 emissions: tackling what can be avoided and converting what remains into projects that deliver tangible environmental benefits."

Jean-Charles Djelalian, Chief Sustainability Officer

Responsible travel practices have led to a -22% reduction in business travel emissions between 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the Travel Carbon Fund supports several of Solvay’s sustainability goals related to Climate and Nature:

  • Direct emissions (scope 1 & 2): -30% reduction target by 2030 (vs. 2021), with -29% already achieved by end-2025.

  • Emissions along the value chain (scope 3, focus 5 categories): -20% reduction target by 2030 (vs. 2021), with -13% already achieved by end-2025.

  • Biodiversity: 30% land under conservation or restoration by 2030, with 16% achieved by end-2025.
