CEO Philippe Kehren and Solvay leaders to leverage the Ernest Solvay Fund to provide donations in response to Rio Grande do Sul’s catastrophic conditions

Solvay, a world-leading chemical company with headquarters in Belgium, announced today its commitment to aid Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul province in the wake of record catastrophic weather. Solvay is leveraging the Ernest Solvay Fund to provide vital support, totaling approximately €60,000.

Since late April 2024, Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul province has experienced historic rains and flooding, which have led the Brazilian government to declare a state of emergency. Government officials estimate that more than 600,000 people have been displaced with numbers expected to rise.

“We are very saddened by the ongoing rains and flooding impacting communities in southern Brazil. The country and people of Brazil are important to Solvay and we are committed to assist during this time of need. Through the Ernest Solvay Fund, we are pleased to donate approximately R$280,000 Brazilian Real (€50,000) to the Government of Rio Grande do Sul to deploy funds where needs are most urgent.”

Philippe Kehren, Solvay CEO

The Ernest Solvay Fund supports initiatives in Belgium and in the countries where Solvay is active in the company's key corporate social responsibility policy areas - STEM education, scientific progress and sustainable development. It is administered through the King Baudouin Foundation.

“We greatly appreciate the Ernest Solvay Fund donation,” said Daniela Manique, Solvay’s President - COATIS Global Business Unit & CEO Latin America. “The Rhodia business unit is also pleased to donate approximately R$60,000 Brazilian Real (€10,000) to the Government of Rio Grande do Sul in support of relief efforts.” Beyond financial donations, Solvay’s Brazil-based employees are also supporting a wide range of volunteer efforts.

Brazil is home to Solvay’s Rhodia Global Business Unit headquarters. Approximately 1,300 Solvay team members work in Brazil at the company’s headquarters site (Sao Paolo), research and innovation center (Paulinia) and production sites (Brotas, Curitiba, Imperatriz, Paulinia and Santo André).
