Solvay expands its thermal management solutions for automotive with new high-performance Ryton® PPS and Amodel® PPA specialty polymers

Bollate, Italy, Nov. 02, 2017– Solvay, a leading global supplier of specialty polymers, unveiled a significant expansion to its portfolio of thermal management solutions with the introduction of Ryton® R-4-300 polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and the new Amodel® A-89XX series of polyphthalamide (PPA) polymers.

The latest addition to Solvay’s family of linear PPS products, Ryton® R-4-300 polymer offers improved performance in tensile strength and elongation, as well as best-in-class weld-line strength. This new material is suitable for thermal management modules and parts where complex geometries require robust mechanical properties.

Solvay’s launch of the Amodel® A-89XX series further expands what is already the industry’s broadest PPA portfolio for thermal management. The new series of glass fiber-reinforced PPA grades ranges from 30 to 50 percent glass-filled loading. Offering improved dimensional stability, lower moisture uptake and enhanced chemical resistance, the Amodel® A-89XX series targets applications such as thermostat housings, multi-coolant valves, water inlets/outlets and cross overs, and other under-the-hood components.

“One important detail underlying the introduction of these two new, very high-performing product platforms is that Solvay’s unmatched portfolio of specialty polymers offers a single source of solutions for structural components, seals and lubrication within automotive thermal management modules and multi coolant valves,”said Brian Baleno, global automotive business manager for Solvay’s Specialty Polymers business unit. “Further, choosing many of our advanced polymers allows automakers to streamline and consolidate the design of these parts.”

In addition to complementing Solvay’s Ryton® PPS and Amodel® PPA thermal management portfolios, the new products join the company’s broader offering for automotive applications, including Solef® polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Hyflon® perfluoroalkoxys (PFA) polymers for rotary valve seals, Fomblin® perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricants, and Tecnoflon® fluoroelastomers (FKM) for O-rings and gaskets.
