Better Life

Improving quality of life

At Solvay, we want to create a Better Life for all – to enhance the lives and wellbeing of Solvay employees and the communities we serve. Through a range of commitments and initiatives, we’re working to address key global challenges while promoting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing among our team.

Our Better Life Commitments

Discover how we’re committing to improving the quality of life for our team and communities with dedicated objectives across areas such as safety, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and wellbeing.

Safety

We’re committed to keeping our employees safe and creating a workplace where accidents don’t happen. To achieve this, we’re working towards a goal of zero accidents and zero reportable Injury & Illness rate (RIR), per 200,000 work hours) by 2030.

The living wage

We believe everyone deserves to earn a fair wage. That’s why our Better Life roadmap includes a commitment to making sure 100% of our workforce is paid a living wage (as defined by the Global Living Wage Coalition) by 2026.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)

We’re proud to say that of our workforce, 24% are women. Among leadership positions in our organization, 26% of those are also women. But there’s still work to do and one of our DEI commitments is to achieve gender parity in mid and senior management in the next 10 years. Other steps we’re taking to foster gender equality include a focus on equitable pay, fair hiring practices and equal career development.

To ensure we’re staying on track, we will be carrying out an annual survey to gauge how inclusive our employees find the Solvay experience. We also encourage the use of Speak Up, our ethics and compliance hotline, to highlight any non-inclusive behaviors. The hotline can be used by suppliers as well as employees.

Our Initiatives

Our Better Life commitments are complemented and enhanced by a wide range of initiatives:

Solvay Cares

Solvay Cares guarantees all Solvay employees certain key social benefits – no matter which country they work in. This includes health insurance, disability and life insurance, and a minimum of 16 weeks of parental leave for all parents. Our parental leave policy is available to any co-parent regardless of country, employment type and sexual orientation, and covers parents who adopt.

Employee and human rights

In March 2022, we committed to implementing employee rights under a Global Framework Agreement with the IndustriALL union, which represents over 50 million workers in the mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors around the world. These commitments cover everything from health and safety and DEI to remote working.

We’ll also continue to build on the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact initiative with respect to human rights, employee rights, the environment and anti-corruption – reporting annually on our progress.

Sharing our sustainable success with our team and communities

We’re dedicated to making sure sustainability remains a significant part of our long-term Solvay share incentive for senior management, short-term cash incentive for all managers, and global performance sharing program for all other employees.

Moreover, we’re proud that 2,100 of our 9,000 employees around the world decided to acquire Solvay shares on preferential terms in the frame of the plan launched in 2022. By becoming shareholders of the Group, they have reinforced their connection to the success of the company.

In addition, Solvay shares its successes with its communities through societal and philanthropic actions

Our code of business integrity

We have a global code of business integrity that applies to everyone at Solvay and that we all have to sign. By implementing this code, which includes annual training for every employee, we make sure that we can all observe the same ethical way of working, holding ourselves to the highest standards.
