Press release

Alpharetta, Ga., Oct. 13, 2017--- Solvay, a leading global supplier of specialty polymers, has announced that its high-performance Udel® P-1700 polysulfone (PSU) polymer enabled PendoTECH to innovate biocompatible, transparent housings for a family of sensors targeting single-use biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing applications. A leader in sensors, monitors, and control systems for the industry, PendoTECH developed its single-use products for discrete, inline measurement of pressure, temperature, conductivity, ultraviolet absorbance and turbidity during biopharmaceutical development and production.

“Biopharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly drawn to the greater flexibility and faster time to market made possible through single-use technologies and systems,”said Dennis Annarelli, PhD, technical and quality manager at PendoTECH. “But the shift toward single-use systems requires higher performing polymers, like those from Solvay that offer viable alternatives to traditional re-usable metal parts. The unique performance profile of Udel® P-1700 PSU made it an ideal fit for our sensor housings, and offers an excellent illustration of how advanced polymers are driving change in today’s biopharmaceutical industry.”

Udel® P-1700 PSU is certified under United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI test standards – both before and after gamma irradiation – helping to ensure that the molded housings used in PendoTECH’s sensors meet the industry’s stringent requirements for biocompatibility. Solvay’s PSU has also been tested under ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards for cytotoxicity, irritation and acute systemic toxicity.

Moldable and transparent, Udel® P-1700 PSU allows PendoTECH’s sensor housings to provide improved ease of use versus stainless steel housings. It delivers excellent thermal and chemical resistance, as well as exceptional dimensional and hydrolytic stability. Unlike lower performing transparent polymers, PSU is compatible with both steam autoclave and gamma irradiation sterilization. Further, Solvay supports its PSU with product traceability and offers global technical and regulatory support.

“Due to the success and performance of our sensor products, PendoTECH intends to continue using Udel® PSU polymer in a range of new sensors and other products under development,”Annarelli said.

A leading supplier of specialty polymers, Solvay brings over 25 years of healthcare industry experience, reliability and innovation to the biopharmaceutical industry. In addition to Udel® PSU, the company offers a broad selection of high-performance polymers ideally suited for single-use peripherals, filtration, bioreactors and containment.
